Lewes Cemetery is a closed cemetery, located in the South East of Lewes.

Lewes Cemetery is a closed cemetery; all burial plots have been used or pre-purchased so there are no new spaces available for full burial. Burials can still take place, in pre-purchased plots or by reopening graves at the owner's instruction. Lewes Cemetery offers traditional plots, lawn cemetery plots, children's plots, ashes plots and the Chapel. There is also a small scattering area below the Southern Section where cremated remains can be scattered by prior arrangement only.

All interments need to be organised through the Burials team, either directly (ashes only) by calling 01323 761093 or through a Funeral Director. Every full grave can hold up to six sets of ashes, even if there are already full interments at full depth. Cremated remains graves can hold up to two sets of ashes. There are still plots available in the Garden of Rest and the Garden of Rest West.

Plots are allocated at the time of booking an interment and cannot be reserved or pre-purchased (bought in advance for future use). Available ashes plots in the GOR and GoR West are assigned in order of booking and cannot be chosen for their location by prospective owners. There has recently been an extension of the GoR West and these plots will become available once all the remaining plots have been used. Most ashes interments will be into the plots in the GoR West, with GOR plots being held for any families wishing to lay their loved ones' ashes to rest with other family members already resting in the GOR. If you feel you qualify for this, please do mention it at the time of booking and we will do our very best to accommodate your request and allocate the closest available plot to your loved ones.

The site has a small car park accessed from Rotton Row, and a smaller car parking area at the top of the hill on Winterbourne Hollow, as well as a chapel. The chapel seats 50 people and can be booked separately from a burial for memorial services; just contact the Bereavement team on 01323 761093, or by emailing [email protected] or using the Contact us page. There are toilets available on site near the Chapel, or the next nearest are in Grange Gardens.

Some of the older sections of the cemetery have been designated for wilding, to enhance biodiversity, support pollinators and improve soil health. If a grave you wish to visit is within one of the wilding areas, please call 01323 761093, Monday to Friday 9am to 3pm, in advance of your visit and the team will arrange a safe path to be cut through to the grave. Alternatively, you can email a request to [email protected] or use the Contact us page.
